This half-day course, comprising two illustrated Power Point presentations, begins by briefly examining the portrait tradition. It then explains in detail the techniques for accurately dating old family photographs, from formal Victorian studio portraits, through early-20th century postcard scenes to amateur open-air snapshots. It also demonstrates how to identify the occasions that prompted earlier generations to pose before the camera, including birthday, engagement, marriage, christening, 'breeching', new school/job and mourning.
