In this half-day course, Lynda Hotchkiss covers two topics:

Session 1 - Finding Real People Who Don’t Exist

Some people on our family tree seem to refuse to be found. Lynda offers several reasons why finding an ancestor might prove difficult and how to overcome these research problems.

Session 2 - Expanding your Family History

Assuming that you have the basics down, Lynda looks at using other, less well known sources. They may help you to find leads that enable you to continue your research and at the same time brings your ancestor to life. Sources which may be covered include: marriage bonds/allegations; using inventories to understand how your ancestors lived; military sources found easily; looking for paupers; how newspapers can give clues, especially about law-breakers. Lynda provides useful suggestions for expanding your family history research and therefore your family tree.
