Do you have Hampshire ancestors? Many of us do. By the middle of the 1800s, the county’s population had doubled. Most people were agricultural labourers, with cereals, hops, honey, sheep and pigs being important. The county is also famous for its ports: Portsmouth is a major naval base and Southampton had large docks. Most of the crew of the Titanic came from Southampton.

The county was home to Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Florence Nightingale grew up there and Isambard Kingdom Brunel was born there. It’s possible that cricket was first played by a team at Hambledon in 1750 and the world’s oldest surviving bowling green is the Southampton Old Bowling Green, first used in 1299.

In this half-day course Les Mitchinson shows you where to look, how to get the most from the records and how to organise your research.
