It is almost too easy to start researching your family tree these days. Commercial companies tell us ‘put in a name and see what you uncover’. Is it really that simple?

How do you know your family tree is correct? Should you trust the family trees you find online? Are there no other possibilities for the father of John Hopkins?

In this half day course Karen Cummings demonstrates how to research your family tree the way the professionals do and how to have confidence in your family tree. She covers two issues:

Session 1

How to get organised right at the start. How to make good notes. And, in particular, how to note when something is uncertain.

Session 2

What to do when you run into problems. Karen uses examples from the records of civil registration and census records to show:

- How to overcome hurdles;

- What other records you could consider;

- How to think around the problem.
