Over the centuries, one of Ireland’s and Scotland’s greatest exports has been its people. This has taken many guises: to voluntarily travel the world; to explore; to seek fame and fortune; to trade, colonise or govern; to be forcibly transported; to fight or garrison some far off settlement. It is estimated that there are over one million people of Irish birth in Britain today, plus numerous second, third or fourth generation Irish. Approximately 800,000 people born in Scotland now live in England, Wales or Ireland. Plus, of course, many millions of people of Scottish and Irish descent live in North America, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, South America and most of Europe.

In this half-day course, Maggie Loughran looks at the reasons for migration, the history and politics behind it and the type of records that you can consult when researching migrants.
