When it opened in 1851, the Second Middlesex County Pauper Lunatic Asylum at Colney Hatch was the largest in Europe. It was founded on the principle of no restraint. Patients were encouraged to work in its workshops, in the bakery and brewery and on the farm which made it almost self-sufficient. It ended life as Friern Hospital and, with the controversial policy of ‘Care in the Community’, was closed in 1993. It has been converted into luxury apartments.
