Staffordshire is a large and diverse county. It has embraced the metal-bashing and mining of the Black Country, the rural market towns of mid-Staffordshire, the important cathedral city of Lichfield, and the world-beating industries of the Potteries.

In this half-day workshop Mike Sharpe looks at Staffordshire’s economic and social history and shows how local factors influenced our ancestors’ occupations, movements and way of life.

Session 1

Mike focuses on the specific circumstances of the Staffordshire Potteries.

Session 2

Mike discusses the key archives and sources for Staffordshire research. Sources covered include parish registers, wills and legal records, as well as the archives of local government, employers, institutions, societies and schools.
