Essex is a rich tapestry of a county, ranging from small rural villages famous for their windmills, such as Finchingfield, to busy urban parishes that are now part of London, such as Walthamstow. It is its relationship with the boundary with London that adds complexity to the search for Essex ancestors.

Karen will begin this half day course with a brief history of Essex and then move into record access, where the records are kept, access to indexes, what is online and what is not. The building blocks of family history; BMDs, census records, parish registers and probate records will be considered in the context of research in Essex, the complexities of the county boundaries and jurisdiction changes with time.

To build upon this case studies will be used to expand research into a whole host of other records, with a little help from Essex born ‘incorrigible rogue’, Jonathan Horsley, and John Gast, transported convict. Also considered will be “where to go next”; other resources available for Essex research.

Karen Cummings is professional genealogist based at the Suffolk / Cambridgeshire / Essex border.
