The walk will be led by Derek Morris, author of ‘Whitechapel 1600-1800’ (available through the SoG bookshop).  The walk will last approximately two hours and will explore the links in the 18th century between the people of Whitechapel and the great City institutions and the Tower Hamlets Militia established in the 1640s. Goodmans Fields the focus is on the long tradition of theatres in Whitechapel beginning in the 1560s and continuing into the 19th century. The walk includes a visit to the St George's Lutheran Chapel , which is the best surviving Lutheran chapel in north-west Europe.  In Whitechapel High Street the emphasis will be on the local industries including the bell foundry, sugar refiners, taverns, and the manufacture of Coade Stone and White Lead. The walk will conclude at the Royal London Hospital, where the hospital museum will be open, if you wish to visit.

With Derek Morris.
