An examination of civil registration birth, marriage and death certificates from two points of view: the sometimes perilous journey of copying from the point of creation to "official copies"; and even if there were no errors, how truthful were the original statements of the indivduals concerned?
Dr David Wright has been a professional genealogist for most of his working life. His previous classical studies at University College, London, made him only too aware that the transmission of any text is subject to the highly fallible copying process - whether Latin and Greek manuscripts, Victorian handwriting, or even the printed book. Errors of the eye, the ear and the mind are in constant play, and we therefore accept any text with the universal caveat that it may be at many removes from the original author's hand.
