Using the Library

The Library is open to all.


Loans

Members living permanently in the British Isles may borrow certain material from the library. Follow the links on the left of this page to the on-line library catalogue to check what is available and the link to Borrowing from the library for further details.


Rules

Coats, bags, briefcases, pens, biros, pagers, mobile phones and sharp implements such as knives, scissors or scalpels are not allowed in the library and should be left in the locker room near the reception area.

Computers, digital cameras and USB storage devices may be used by arrangement with the library staff. See also "Copying material in the Library" below.

Smoking is forbidden throughout the building.

Members wishing to bring children under 12 years old into the Library must ask the Librarian for permission to do so.

Food and Drink

There is a drinks machine, kettle, fridge, microwave oven and toaster in the Common Room on the ground floor and numerous cafes and restaurants in the immediate area. No food or drink may be taken into the library or lecture room.


Copying material in the Library

There are photocopiers, film, fiche and laser printers in the library. Change for coin-boxes can be given at the library enquiry counters. There is a small daily charge for the use of personal digital cameras and other data storage devices. The laws of copyright must be obeyed: briefly - no more than 5% of any item may be copied and only for personal research. Use of any copy of material in the library for publication in any form, including on the Web, requires permission from the Librarian who can be contacted at librarian@sog.org.uk.


Library tours for new visitors and Saturday advice service

Free introductory tours of the library are given at 11.15 a.m. on approximately every other Saturday. Contact the library well in advance to book your place (Tel: 020 7702 5484 or e-mail: librarian@sog.org.uk) as the number is restricted to fifteen per group.

The Society also offers a free advice service to members and day visitors. Appointments can be made with the library staff who take the bookings for the morning tours. The half hour advice sessions take place between 2 and 5 pm on the same alternate Saturdays as library tours.
