Introduction to the Surname Document Collection
Introduction
The Surname Document Collection is arranged A-Z by surname and consists of:
- Original documents such as birth, marriage and death certificates, deeds, wills, marriage licences and settlements, apprenticeship indentures, letters etc
- Manuscript and typescript transcripts of wills, parish register entries etc, family trees and other research notes
This index lists all of the surnames that are included in the Surname Document Collection. Cross references to alternative spellings may have been included but these are not necessarily complete.
Material may be photocopied (at the Librarian's discretion) but is not available for loan, nor, due to limited staff time, can it usually be searched for named individuals. Enquiries should be made using the link to the Limited search & copy service.
This index was compiled from a physical examination of the contents of the boxes forming the Collection. It is now regularly updated by volunteers and further help in this task is always welcome. Please contact the Librarian if you would like to volunteer.
Additions to the document collection
Any new material for the Society's Document Collection such as birth, marriage and death certificates, copies of wills (especially un-probated ones), family trees etc are always welcome. Please give any items to the staff in the Middle Library or send it to the Society care of the Librarian. Donations are noted in the Genealogist's Magazine and any "new" surnames are added to the index.
Important Notice
There is also much unbound material on families and surnames in the Society's Special Collections which are accessed by a comprehensive surname card index in the Lower Library. Please note that those names are NOT cross referred to in this index. If you would like to know if a surname appears in the Special Collections index, please enquire via the link to the Limited search & copy service.
All bound family history material is listed on SOGCAT, the Society’s on-line catalogue.
- Click on this link to go to the Online Library Catalogue SOGCAT page
- Change the default "Look for" list from titles by clicking on the downward pointing chevron and clicking on "Subject"
- In the "Begins with" box, type in the first six or so letters of the surname you are seeking
- Click on the "Go" button. The relevant entry, if present, should be followed by the word surname in brackets e.g. Smith (surname)
- Click on the name to see the titles
If you cannot visit the Society to see items of interest, the Research Assistant, may be able to copy up to 5% of a bound family history, provided that the name you seek is indexed. More informatiaon about the search & copy service.
