Bedfordshire tombstone inscriptions available on SoG Data Online
Those with ancestors from Bedfordshire will be delighted to know that the Society of Genealogists' online records (SoG Data Online) now contain a large number of tombstone inscriptions for that county. They were orginally recorded by Arthur Weight Matthews in the first half of the 20th century, and reveal links between family members that cannot be gleaned from burial registers alone. The collection includes records of tombstones that are no longer legible or have been moved in recent years due changes in churchyard use. Mr Matthews filled in 17 notebooks of inscriptions (quaintly entitled 'Ye Olde Mortality'), and these can be searched by name, together with a link to the image of the original notebook (at present 5 of the 17 volumes can be seen online).
The Society has the largest collection of monumental inscription transcripts in the country, and more of them will be added to SoG Data Online in due course (copyright permitting).
