Booze and Clues: Tracing my Publican Ancestry - A One-hour Lecture on 24 October

In this talk, Dr Gwyneth Wilkie draws on research done into some of her pub-keeping forebears. Most of them lived in Lancashire and Cheshire in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The research centres on the Fletcher and Hunt families, who ran the Griffin Inn in Bowdon, Cheshire. Gwyneth covers:

- The different kinds of records that proved useful;

- The varied role of the pub in the community;

- Attitudes to drink;

- Some of the attempts to tax and regulate the trade, which did not always bring about the desired results.

A one-hour talk on Wednesday, 24 October (2pm), cost £8.00/£6.40 SoG members. Places should be pre-booked, through our website or by telephone: 020 7553 3290 (Tue-Thu & Sat). Do you have a question? email the events department.
