New Hints and Tips and Records on the Society of Genealogists Website

Over the last six weeks Abbie Black, a genealogy undergraduate student from Brigham Young University, Utah has been working with the Librarian, Tim Lawrence and Genealogist, Else Churchill at the Society of Genealogists as part of an internship programme. Abbie brought her palaeographic and genealogy skills to various projects over the Summer. She has scanned, transcribed, indexed and uploaded many documents for our online data on the website  including digitising  some 25 volumes of original marriage licences and 18 volumes of original apprentice indentures from our Crisp Collection of original documents.

In addition we have benefitted from Abbie's fresh perspective as she has contributed another seven useful “hints and tips” leaflets for the learn pages of the Society’s website www.sog.org.uk. Amongst these you will find a really useful two-part introduction to reading and abstracting old documents along with guides to getting the best from FamilySearch and the IGI, downloading wills from TNA’s Discovery platform  as well as  some useful hints about keeping a search log and writing reports about your family history research. We will be adding more of Abbie’s leaflets over the next few months.

We hope Abbie enjoyed her Summer at the Society of Genealogists and wish her well  in the future as she is is about to graduate form BYU.
