Society of Genealogists Certificate of Recognition 2015 Awards and 2016 Nominations

The Society of Genealogists Certificate of Recognition was introduced in 2013 for exceptional contributions to genealogy by individuals and institutions. Nominees may be from around the world and do not need to be members of the Society.

The 2015 Recipients, announced at the Society's AGM in June, were Wendy Hibbitt and Peter Higginbotham.

Wendy has been the archivist for the village of Writtle in Essex for the past 25 years, during which time she has transcribed and indexed its parish registers, census and other records, opened the archives to the public weekly, answered queries and written a number of publications. The citation on her award certificate presented at the Society’s recent AGM  reads, "For ensuring that the history and heritage of Writtle in Essex and its people are preserved, documented and available to all".

Peter will be well known to many for his two websites on workhouses and children's homes, which are acknowledged to be the major sources of information on these subjects. He has also written a number of books and articles and appears regularly on TV and radio. Peter's citation reads, "For his dedication in compiling extensive information on workhouses and children's homes and making it widely available".

The Society is delighted to announce that Peter will receive his Certificate of Recognition at the Houses of Parliament on Wednesday 23 September where he is participating as a speaker in the Festival of Freedoms celebrating 800 years of rights and representation. Members of the Society are now invited to nominate an individual or organisation for the 2016 awards. Forms are available from the Chief Executive, e-mail: ceo@sog.org.uk. Electronic communication is preferable but not essential. The deadline for applications is 8th January 2016; completed forms must be returned by 5th February 2016. Only one nomination per member is permitted. The proposer must identify the nominee at the time of applying for the form to avoid unnecessary duplication.

Successful recipients will be announced in mid-2016.
