The Society’s collection is of national importance and includes county and local directories of residents and businesses and poll books and other lists of voters in parliamentary and local elections. Details, correct as of 1995, are published in:

The Isle of Man was in the province of York and the Diocese of Sodor and Man. Until the abolition of the Archdeacon’s Court in 1874, the year was divided into two parts with alternating jurisdiction of the Vicar General of the Bishop of Sodor and Man and the official of the Archdeacon of the Isle of Man. From 1874 until the end of 1884 wills were proved solely in the bishop’s consistory court. From 1885 jurisdiction was transferred to civil courts (the High Court of Justice) and records are kept in the island’s Deeds and Probate Registry.
If the deceased lived or had property outside the island the will may have been proved in the Prerogative Courts of Canterbury or York, the Chancery Court of the Archbishop of York, the Commissariot Court of Edinburgh, the Prerogative Court of Armagh or the Irish Principal Registry, the Consistory Courts of Carlisle, Richmond (Western Deaneries) or Chester or, since 1858, in the Principal Probate Registry in London.
The Library contains film copies of indexes to wills proved at the Principle Probate Registry 1858-1930 and indexes, calendars and many abstracts of wills proved by individual church courts before 1858. Details, correct as of 1996, are published in:
