Shelf Mark: Shelf Mark

For an explanation of this information, please consult the Introduction and the list of Abbreviations. Recent additions to the Society's Library are listed in the Genealogists' Magazine. The staff of the Society are able to make limited searches in these County Sources for a standard fee. Shelf marks used in the library are given in square brackets at the very end of each title.

What is Middlesex?

Middlesex became a shire in the 10th Century and was divided into the Hundreds of Edmonton, Elthorne, Gore, Hounslow, Ossulstone and Spelthorne. Much of the area was lost to the County of London with the passing of the Local Government Act 1888. Middlesex ceased to exist as a separate county on 31st March 1965 when, together with parts of Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent and Surrey, it became part of the administrative area known as Greater London.

The Library of the Society of Genealogists, and this guide, assign places to Middlesex as it existed before 1889.
