Volunteers' reference

Certain volunteers have asked for additional reference material over and above that provided with the on-line help provided with the data input program, Andrew. Two kinds of additional reference - Chapman county codes and standard parish names are provided below.

Chapman County Codes

The following codes are automatically validated by Andrew. This does not prevent other codes being entered in addition but the unrecognised ones will be questioned.

Standard parish names

The general style to be adopted for parish names is [dedication][,] [place] with the county entered in the next text field. A comma should generally be placed between the dedication and the place. However in many parts of Britain there is no dedication necessary because the place, if a village or small town, only had one parish church and the parish was known by the place name. A dedication however is particularly important in differentiating parishes in the densely populated area from which most of the St Andrew, Holborn grooms and brides were drawn. In addition the dedication was often qualified in some other way to avoid confusion. Selected standard parish names for London and the urban area of Middlesex at the period relevant to the registers being indexed are listed below. Thess should give adequate guidance for the large majority of cases found in the St Andrew, Holborn registers.

Special case
St Andrew, Holborn spanned the boundary between London and Middlesex. Because the parish church itself is situated in London and the registers are held at the Guildhall Library we have decided that the county code that should be associated with St Andrew, Holborn is LND. The parish should be so recorded even in those cases where it appears that the bride or groom were resident in that part of the parish located in Middlesex.
