The detail below, from a painting by Samuel Scott, shows Lambeth Palace from across the River Thames. It was painted in the mid 18th century and this view is still very much recognisable today some 250 years later. The Lambeth Palace Library is now behind a wall more or less where the trees are in the centre of the painting and the originals of the Vicar-General Marriage Licence Allegations are currently stored in a large room in the brick gatehouse (Morton's Tower) just to the centre right of the this image. The church on the right now houses a museum of garden history.
