General Genealogical Sites

GENUKI provides a virtual reference library of genealogical information of particular relevance to the UK and Ireland. It is a non-commercial service, maintained by a charitable trust and a group of volunteers.

CyndisList is a free, comprehensive, categorised & cross-referenced list of links that point you to genealogical research sites online. It is especially useful for non UK links and addresses

Rootsweb is a FREE genealogical community of mailing lists, surname and local interest groups, volunteer projects and much more

Government repositories

The ARCHON Directory provides contact details for record offices, libraries and other record collecting institutions throughout the United Kingdom and overseas

The National Archives is the official archives of the UK Government and is especially useful for records of government departments, armed services, courts, probate and nationalised industries.

The General Register Office is part of the Identity and Passport Service and oversees civil registration in England and Wales. It maintain the Registrar General's national archive of all births, marriages and deaths dating back to 1837
