Education records

The Society's library holds a remarkable number of resources relating to the education of students and their teachers. Many of the printed books are the published student registers of older foundation public and grammar schools. The Society has digitised many of these books and they can be viewed online amongst the digitised collections. Many of these prestigious institutions were founded for the education of poor scholars and date quite early. In addition the library holds published alumni records for the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge and for later English foundations along with Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dublin etc. At a local level the Society holds many copies of admission registers and log books for schools created after the 1870s education acts which instigated compulsory education for all children.

The Society of Genealogists Library is not a record office of public deposit but often acts as a record office of last resort, taking in in records that haven’t found a home at the National Archives or similar repositories. Here we have taken in and put on line records relating to The Teachers’ Registration Council registers that give the career details of teachers who elected to register between 1902 and 1949. The records of those who chose to register shows where they trained and and where they worked and have been added to the SoG digital collections
