Parish Registers

First introduced in 1538 the Parish registers of the Church of England record baptisms, marriages and burials.

These are the main sources used by family historians wishing to research their ancestry before 1837 when the civil records of birth, marriage and death began.

The Society of Genealogists has the largest collection of register transcripts, indexes and finding aids for the parishes in England and Wales as well as for Scotland an Ireland.

In addition to the registers in book form the Society holds many copies of original records on microfiche and film, and as a Family search affiliate library, increasingly as digital copies.

Many of our transcripts and indexes are being published on line for our members

The parish registers amongst the Society's digital collections are a snapshot of the resources found in the library. They include digital copies of published registers from the library, indexes to county marriages, databases and transcriptions donated by members.

More will be digitised in due course but until then do make a search at the online Society Library Catalogue to see what records we hold for the parish your are interested in.

You can search the library catalogue and digital collections on the collections page of our website here

As the Society of Genealogists is also a FamilySearch Affiliate Library the microfilm and digital records created by FamilySearch that are available to view at the Society of Genealogists are listed in the FamilySearch online Catalogue (external link)
